I feel that every woman should do a Candida cleanse at some point in her life, if not as a yearly Female Health & Wellness Ritual:

Candida Overgrowth is an insidious ill that causes nonspecific, annoying and sometimes debilitating symptoms including menopausal and PMS symptoms. People erroneous think Candida overgrowth is a systemic infection. But a systemic infection is when the Candida spores (seeds) are actually in the blood- an emergent condition! Rather, we are talking about insidious Candida hyphae (roots) in the intestinal wall (gut lumen), from where it continuously re-inoculates the fecal stream, and migrates through the gut to other organ systems- INVASIVE!
There are at least 26 strains of Candida, and their by-products of metabolism drain & damage tissues. spores/yeast cells produce over 75 known toxic substances that poison the human body on a continuous basis. A glycoprotein metabolite called acetylaldehyde causes immune & inflammatory disorders by disarming the immune system-> Candida renders itself hidden from the immune system!
Candida is a PANDEMIC immune-system crisis! According to Bastyr College of Naturopathic Medicine, the Post WWII generation was the first to grow-up with antibiotics, birth control pills, cortisone, formula fed babies, HRT, simple sugars in processed foods (especially corn syrup & high fructose). All of these support Candida proliferation. Some KEY points on Candida:

  • Synthetic analogues of estrogen (e.g. hormone replacement therapy) soften the vaginal and GI mucosa and make them more susceptible to yeast proliferation.
  • Hormones from the GI tract travel to the brain to trigger feelings of hunger or satiety. It is speculated that Candida triggers sugar craving and addiction in a similar way.
  • An infant’s bowel is inoculated with friendly bifidus/BIFIDO bacteria when ingesting breastmilk. Since this bacterium inhibits Candida proliferation, non-breast fed humans are susceptible to Candida overgrowth.
  • Tetracycline is paradoxically a growth stimulant for Candida.

DIAGNOSIS is based on symptoms, history, screenings & questionnaires, and functional lab tests:

Screens & Questionnaires. The Candida Spit Test is non-scientific but free & easy: On a clean palate in the morning, work up some saliva and spit it into a clear glass of water. If the saliva floats and becomes stringy (like a jellyfish), if the water turns cloudy, or if it settles at the bottom, you may have a Candida problem. Complete a questionnaires below available at Candida Support:

  • Dr. Crook’s Candida Questionnaire, and integrative online screen
  • Dr. Martin’s Candida Severity Test
  • Child-specific Candida screens
Lab Tests
  • D-Arabinitol elevation on an Organic Acid Test (OAT) indicates the presence & severity of invasive Candida.

  • Intestinal Fungus Burden on a Comprehensive Stool Analysis (CSA) uses a 0 to 5 scale representing the number of months of recommended treatment with natural medicines (e.g. +3 = 3 months). 0 - 1 is a normal burden and OK to ignore, 2 - 5 is always treated (5 is very rare). A culture & sensitivity is done to determine the natural substance(s) the Candida strain(s) will be susceptible to.

  • High Mercury Load on a Toxic Element Profile makes it near impossible to eliminate Candida because yeast binds with mercury. It is also associated with Zinc deficiency-> copper toxicity -> low vitamin C level on an OAT. It is OK, even recommended, to detox mercury before having amalgams removed.

  • Zinc Tally Test (grade 4 = no taste at all) is diagnostic of, and an Alkaline Phosphate level below 70 on an OAT is a functional marker of Zinc deficiency, which may lead to poor immune response and persistent yeast infection (other signs are acne, white spots on nails, severe dandruff).

TREATMENT can be basic or extensive, and Candida is highly immunogenic such that die-off symptoms from treatment can be severe! When Candida has broken through the mucosal barrier and becomes invasive, the treatment is challenging and requires patience. An extensive & aggressive approach is required, with strict adherence to anti-Candida diet, anti-fungal, anti-microbials. Before, during, and after Candida load is brought under control, GI  functions must be regulated & restorative.

  • Liposomal Vitamin C 1,000 to 10, 000mg as tolerated to offset the die-off symptoms.

  • Candida Diet (see TheCandidaConnection by Dr. William Crook)

  • Probiotics benefit yeast-like non-invasive states of sugar-fermenting organism limited to the intestines (and/or vagina).Taking a minimum of 40-80 billion colony-forming units (CFU) of bacteria daily is critical to re-inoculate the gut after antibiotic therapy. See ABOUT YOUR PROBIOTICS.

ThreeLac is a 500 billion CFU blend of Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus subtilis, and Enterococcus faecalis. A unique micro-encapsulation process allows the bacteria to pass through the stomach into the small intestine. After 30 days on ThreeLac, 3 packets daily, 8 of 9 subjects showed reduction of Candida antibody levels. FiveLac adds bifido & acidophilus species A even higher potency product may be needed to effectively treat severe Candida such as Formula SF722 by Thorne (50 mg 2 capsules 3 x daily contains caprylic & undecenoic acids), Healthy Origins, or Prescript-Assist. (All on Amazon).

Bifido GI Balance by Life Extension, 1 capsule 1 or 2 x daily, with or without food. For optimal potency, refrigerate after opening. Contains Bifidobacterium longum BB536® 25 mg, supplying 2 billion CFU. (Amazon $15.00).

Bifidus Balance + Fos by Jarrow provides 5 billion CFU of 4 species of the Bifidobacterium genus. They are the predominant, beneficial bacteria residing in the colon. (Amazon)

Maintenance: A product with 15 to 30 billion CFU of a well-rounded mixture of PRE & PRObiotics (e.g. Go Live brand). Include cultured foods in diet (yogurt, miso, kefir, apple cider vinegar, tempeh, Pão de Queijo, Senegalese soup, tzatziki, Lassi, Shrikhand, even beer). View Dr. Mercola on Kinetic Culture Yogurt Maker & Starter.

  • Intestinal Fungus Formula + Neem 300-600mg daily + Allicin 400mg 3-6 times daily x 10 days, or 900mg 3x daily for 10 days. Alternate these at least every 3 months for at least 9 months or more for GI, vaginal, and perhaps invasive Candida. Alternating the herbals avoids Candida achieving microbial resistance. May add Oregano Oil Formula or A.D.P. Emulsified Oregano Oil (Biotics) that most effectively reaches the colon where the majority of beneficial bacteria reside.
is the therapeutic (low FODMAP) anti fungal chemical in garlic. Garlic has been shown to be effective against all but 2 of 26 strains of Candida, and the March 1985 issue of “Scientific American” reported that garlic is effective against 200 varieties of pathogenic fungi.

  • Gamma-Linoleic Acid (GLA), an omega 6 fatty acid, helps prevent Candida roots from becoming systemically invasive. It is in evening primrose, black currant, borage, or fungal (e.g. truffles) oils.

  • Cilantro Metal Detox with Chlorella (Source Naturals). See protocol.

  • IPS (Biotics) to support the integrity of the intestinal mucosa.

  • Anti fungal Essential Oils (EO). Consult/research before using EOs internally, always use therapeutic-grade products (from e.g. Nature's Gift, Floracopeia, Laboratory of Flowers, Do Terra, Young Living, Amaritia, Apothecary Shoppe, Snow Lotus etc.), and dilute appropriately.

Sesqueterpines are powerful antimicrobials, researched to kill Candida, parasites & fungus. They also have anti-inflammatory properties. Myrrh commiphora EO has one of the highest levels of Sesqueterpines. Do not use the M. mukul species (aka Guggul), also sold as a cholesterol-lowering supplement. It potentiates or lowers the effect of some pharmaceutical medications (cardiac, cholesterol and birth control pills). Sandalwood EO contains abundant Sesqueterpenes, and treats nail fungus when used topically over several months. Sandalwood is an endangered species and therefore used with scrutiny in aromatherapy. Both are very gentle Class I EOs, so up to a 10% concentration is appropriate!

Cinnamon Bark & Bay Laurel EOs are effective against 2 common species of Candida (C. tropicalis and C. albicans). These have Class III toxic precautions, so 1 to 3% concentration is appropriate.

TeaTree (broad spectrum antimicrobial) + Lavender (soothes irritated tissues, purportedly slows Candida sporilation) + Roman chamomile (many studies show its effectiveness against vaginal yeast, steroidal properties). Make a 5 to 10% dilution in jojoba (soothing), castor oil (penetrating anti-inflammatory), and/or coconut oil (antifungal). Saturate a tampon in the dilution, then insert into the vagina, especially overnight.
